Rain forces sewer overflow

Portland (Friday, August 8) - The rainstorm this morning in Portland has caused the sewer system to spill into the Willamette River.

Health officials are warning against any recreational activity in the Willamette for at least 48 hours after the rain has stopped.

It is especially important to avoid recreational activities such as water skiing, jet skiing or swimming because river water could be swallowed.

Fishermen should wash their hands following contact with the water, and fish should be cooked thoroughly to kill bacteria.
